OUR NEIGHBORS AT WORK!!

Here and "out & about" helping our community!!

THE SIGN REFURBISHMENT COMMITTEE

NOW!!

The NEIGHBORS involved with the refurbished Front Entrance Sign and Landscaping  are:

Pat Worthington: Chair

Ellen Sloboda: Member

Charlie Johnstone: Member

Peggy Johnstone: Secretary

Kathy Mullen: Gardening

Chuck Kelly: Investigative Member

Clint Acton: Board Liaison

Matt Mullen: Irrigation and plant hole digger, (mulch retrieval).

This team did a fantastic job of coordinating the colors of the sign, installing

the right plants to enhance the beauty of the entrance, installing new irrigation

around the sign, and being very mindful of the total cost of the refurbishment.

Avenue of Celebration and Remembrance

Heather Lakes has an “Avenue of Celebration and Remembrance” for all those whom we honor on Memorial Day & Veterens' Day.

Among our NEIGHBORS, there are many veterans, parents of veterans and those currently on active duty, that we will be honoring on Memorial Day. The flags would remain in place through Memorial Day on Monday, May 31. Every time anyone of us drives into or out of Heather Lakes, and those who visit us, the flags would serve as a dramatic reminder of the service of all those who have served and are serving in our armed forces.

If you would like to participate in this effort, and contribute towards the cost of the materials, please be at the amenity center parking lot at 9 AM on Friday, May 28. At that time we will have the flags and those participating will place them along Heather Lake Drive.  Donations of any amount will be accepted for the cost of the flags. The total cost will be explained to those participating. Any monies collected that are in excess of the cost of the materials will be donated to an appropriate veterans or military group to be selected by those present.

 SPRING CLEAN UP 2011

Amenity Center clean-up

The Heather Lakes Board of Directors would like to thank the following people

for a good job well done  getting the Amenity Center ready for another year.

All the furniture received a Spring cleaning, as did the kitchen, the refrigerator, the bathrooms,

and the storage rooms. All the chaise lounges have been re-strapped with new strapping,

in a very pleasant new light green and accented with two straps in a light beige color.

I think everyone will like the new color combination.

Thank you team!!

Volunteers Julia Hungerford and Uncle Sam,

(aka Fred Pitre),

celebrate an early Fourth of July with Summit Place residents.
Residents and guests dressed in red, white and blue attire, some even with straw hats adorned with red, white and blue ribbons, on July 1 paraded around Summit Place, singing patriotic songs and waving small American flags. Julia Hungerford, chairwoman of the Ladies Guild "Creators of Glee" Committee at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in North Myrtle Beach and "Uncle Sam," aka Fred Pitre, a member of the Knights of Columbus, led the parade. The event was an early celebration of the Fourth of July.
Following the parade, there was a sing-along led by Guild member Madelyn Esposito and Hungerford's husband, Richard Hungerford.
The celebrants and their guests also enjoyed a game of Patriotic Trivia, where they learned such facts as 1776 totals 21, and that this formed the basis for the traditional 21-gun salute; and that there is significance in each fold of the 13-fold ceremony when the American flag is presented to someone. Each fold represents a trait or characteristic, such as belief in the sanctity of life or belief in eternal life.
The Creators of Glee served refreshments and presented each resident with a plastic bracelet imprinted with "freedom," "liberty" and other patriotic words and phrases.
It was a meaningful celebration, and everyone seemed to enjoy it.
Summit Place is an assisted-living facility in Little River. Each month, Hungerford prepares a special program for the residents and, with the help of her Creators of Glee volunteers, presents the program, provides refreshments and shares time playing games or just visiting with the men and women who reside there.

College Hosts Ceremonies Honoring Nurse Students
Pinnings tap tradition, emotion
Tradition reigned May 7 at the two pinning ceremonies for nurse graduates at Brunswick Community College in Supply, N.C.
The school held its second annual pinning ceremony for associate degree in nursing recipients. Nursing faculty lit the candle of knowledge and Misty Burckhalter, class vice president, lit the memory candle.
"These graduates could not be here without the partnership of all of us," Sharron Latta, director of associate degree nursing, told the audience.
The officers planned the program, which included a slide show of classmates before they entered the nursing program and then as registered nurses. Taylor Hicks' "Do I Make You Proud" was background music.
The 26-member class chose Belle McGinty, a lead instructor in the nursing program, as their guest speaker. McGinty gave a retrospective of what the students experienced and felt over the past two years. "Do you remember when you didn't think you'd see this day?" she asked. "You rose to the challenge, embraced the hard work. You experienced moments of despair and moments of triumph. This journey is not over. You stand on the springboard to your nursing career."
"We as nurses have a responsibility to embrace the heritage and carry it into the future. The springboard awaits your leap," she said.
"Remember, I believe in you."
