Information for the residents of Heather Lakes from a NEIGHBOR-Nov. 13

"My dog has contracted heartworm. She has been on the preventive medication since we got her. Our Vet said that this disease is growing in leaps and bounds in our area. The biggest carrier is untreated animals, like stray cats, dogs, and even fox. The parasite is spread by a simple infected mosquito's bite.This is going to be a costly treatment and hope our dog survives the cure. I would urge the word get out to stop feeding the stray cats in our development. If you are feeding a stray, then give the proper care or give it to the proper authorities. Don't be part of the problem, help stop the spread of this parasite. Be warned: don't miss a heartworn preventive treatment ( all 12 months in our area ) and it seems sometimes thats no guarantee that your pet won't get this deadly parasite.
