NAME THE PONDS!!

We are starting a new contest.

Our largest lake has a name, Lake Luck, after Colonel Luck who built the original fishing camp that is now our NEIGHBORHOOD.  However, the other 4 ponds do not have “agreed upon” names!  While there are several opinions on names, we need to establish ones that we can use to identify them.

Let’s, for now, call them by letter.  There are 3 of the ponds along Heather Lakes Drive as we enter our NEIGHBORHOOD.  For the sake of the contest, the one on the south side, nearest Rt. 17 will be “A”, the one on the other side of the pool, also on the south side, will be “B”, and the one along the road on the north side will be “C”.  The 4th, off Troon Court, we’ll refer to “D”.

Now……..let’s think of names!!  Send your suggestions, identified by letter for now, to me at
rweldon@sc.rr.comI’ll pass them on to an ad hoc committee, named by our Board, to make decisions!

What are the prizes if your name(s) are selected??  You get a fabulous, nature-related prize, PLUS you get to contribute toward a sign for that pond!  How’s that??  You also get recognition for years to come!!  Certificates will be placed at the Amenity Center with the pond names AND the folks that came up with those names for all, present & future, to see!  Now get thinking……..maybe plants, critters, historic names, places, ?????

Deadline??  How about June 21st, the first day of summer??  We can announce the selections at the NEIGHBORHOOD Party for the 4th of July.  Maybe even sooner?!  How about the Memorial Day picnic??

Oh………since this is my idea, I can’t participate in the contest!  But I can “lobby” you!!

Bob

TAKE A QUIZ!!

***** Q: Why are people in the public eye said to be 'in the  limelight'?
A: Invented in 1825, limelight was used in lighthouses and stage
lighting by burning a cylinder of lime which produced a brilliant
light. In the theatre, performers on stage 'in the limelight' were
seen by the audience to be the center of attention.

***** Q: Why do ships and aircraft in trouble use 'mayday' as their call for help?
A: This comes from the French word m'aidez -meaning 'help me' -- and is pronounced 'mayday'.

***** Q: Why is someone who is feeling great 'on cloud nine'?
A: Types of clouds are numbered according to the altitudes they
attain, with nine being the highest cloud. If someone is said to be on
cloud nine, that person is floating well above worldly cares.

***** Q: Why are zero scores in tennis called 'love'?
A: In France, where tennis first became popular, a big, round zero on
scoreboard looked like an egg and was called 'l'oeuf,' which is French
for 'egg.' When tennis was introduced in the U.S., Americans pronounced it 'love.'

***** Q: In golf, where did the term 'Caddie' come from?
 A. When Mary, later KNOWN AS Queen of Scots, went to France as a young
girl (for education & survival), Louis, King of France, learned that
she loved the Scot game 'golf.' So he had the first golf course
outside of Scotland built for her enjoyment. To make sure she was
properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, Louis hired cadets
from a military school to accompany her. Mary liked this a lot and
when she returned to Scotland (not a very good idea in the long run),
she took the practice with her. In French, the word cadet is
pronounced 'ca-day' and the Scots changed it into 'caddie.' Now you
 know almost everything!
